creativity, online marketing - Small Business Trends

I spend a lot of time marketing my business. To be heard over the ?online noise? and reach a lot of relevant people throughout the world is a trying challenge. It requires much more than banner ads and press releases.

Turn the Switch On

While I am learning about all the things that possibly work with online marketing, it seems that doing things ?well? require me to be creative at all times.? However, every once in a while, a lot of us get the ?creative-block.? Or is it just me? Here are a few things that I do, to get inspiring ideas that move the dial:

Overcoming Writer?s Block

A lot of us write online ? on our own blog or guest posts, business or personal. I am writing this article right now, I write product updates on my own blog and emails communicating what we do, to prospective customers and partners. However, I often stop writing when I do not have fresh thoughts. I envy folks that can produce words and articles on demand.

To overcome this, I came up with ?story-telling? my thoughts. If I am thinking about a topic or a discussion or my product ? I start writing a story around it. The best part about this is that it is honest. It requires no superficial effort to come up with dangling thoughts. The story will be a free-flow form of writing and you can extract the facts from it to write a more concise post.

Overcoming Analytics

While it is great to have access to where all your website visitors come from, it can be very frustrating when a good part of them fall under ?direct? traffic. This means that they came to your site by typing your company URL or feeding your company name into Google. Hence, you do not know for sure where they heard about you or what source, referral or marketing activity worked. You could try asking them during a signup form, but usually that field has to be optional.

You have to use some broad-brush approach to carry on all the wonderful things you are doing for marketing. Check the day?s or week?s traffic and if there is a spike, try to understand what happened during that period. Did an article or review on your company get published?

The point is you cannot stop doing something which will give you consistent, long-term results just because you do not see traffic coming from that activity in real-time. There are word of mouth and gradual brand building efforts, which I have seen grow to a formidable number in our business.

Overcoming Rejection

You are doing content marketing and high energy social media stuff. Now what? Maybe a channel partner would really make an instrumental difference. You reach out to a few suitable partners and let them know how awesome you are. Some may respond or initially you may get nothing.

You need to keep reiterating on what kinds of incentives make sense for different partners. Additionally, some of these partners may respond to you when you have more traction or frequent press. Reinventing and improving your proposals is not only going to land you good channel partners eventually, but also teach you more about your industry and product. While pursuing such initiatives, the creative aspect is in thinking of how you can help others. People will help you grow, if you can help them grow as well.

What do you do to stay creative at work?

Career Advice On Becoming A Risk Manager by Martyn Rodden ...

Full version at icould.com Martyn Rodden is a Risk Manager for Chaucer Insurance. ?In terms of a business, there?s lots of different things that could go wrong, or stop us achieving the things that we want to do as a business. And my job is to try and look forward and see what that could be, and help the business prevent that happening? I think when I first came down to work in the insurance industry I didn?t know what to expect? just the fact that I?ve been relatively successful and enjoyed my work so far, and had the opportunity to travel and meet lots of nice people, make lots of good friends, has been reward enough in itself.?

(AP) ? Serena Williams kept swinging on the final point, and Caroline Wozniacki kept chasing the ball down, running from side to side in a grueling, grunt-filled exchange.

A weary Williams finally hit one where her relentless opponent couldn't reach it: into the net. With that, Wozniacki had a 6-4, 6-4 victory Tuesday night, and a berth in the Key Biscayne semifinals for the first time.

"I made her run," Wozniacki said.

"Everyone I play always plays the match of the year," Williams said.

Wozniacki, a former No. 1, served well and was content to play patiently from the baseline. She extending rallies until Williams would make a mistake, and the stats told the tale: Williams hit 34 winners to 12 for Wozniacki but also committed 36 unforced errors to the Dane's 13.

"I probably played about 20 percent," Williams said. "I just made a tremendous amount of errors. There's no reason for that. I'm older and I shouldn't do that. There's no excuse. I've just got to stop that. It's silly."

Wozniacki celebrated by blowing kisses to the crowd, which included her boyfriend, golfer Rory McIlory. Her opponent in the semifinals Thursday will be No. 2 Maria Sharapova, who advanced by drubbing French Open champion Li Na 6-3, 6-0.

Sharapova had lost their previous four meetings.

"I just really wanted to change that," she said, "so I was extremely focused and, you know, looking forward to the match."

The buzz Andy Roddick got from beating Roger Federer turned into a hangover when Juan Monaco became a real headache. Less than 24 hours after his upset win over Federer, Roddick endured a drubbing against Monaco, 7-5, 6-0.

Monaco, a patient baseliner seeded 21st, was unfazed by Roddick's big serve, and the match became a succession of long rallies. Roddick began to look weary as the match progressed and stumbled after several shots.

Roddick said he's not in peak condition after being sidelined by right hamstring and right ankle injuries earlier this year.

"I just didn't have it physically," he said. "I got to about 4-all, and I was ? you know, I'm out of shape. That's it."

The loss was a big comedown after Roddick beat Federer for only the third time in 24 tries, temporarily silencing critics who say he should consider retirement.

Roddick's ranking has slipped to 34th, his lowest since 2001. He might return to the top 30 next week, and he said his game is headed in the right direction entering the clay-court season.

"My tennis has come around a long way in the last two weeks, maybe three weeks," he said. "Now I feel good enough where I feel like I can put in the work away from the court and get my legs back under me as far as strength and fitness."

In other men's fourth-round play, No. 2 Rafael Nadal swept five consecutive games during one stretch and beat No. 16-seeded Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4.

Nadal, a three-time runner-up at Key Biscayne, lost the final last year to Novak Djokovic, and they could meet again Sunday. The top-ranked Djokovic reached the final eight by beating No. 17-seeded Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3.

No. 4 Andy Murray, No. 5 David Ferrer and No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also won in straight sets.

No. 8 Mardy Fish edged No. 12 Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Fish was relegated to the grandstand court for the third consecutive match, even though he's the top-ranked American man, but the slight didn't faze him.

"I certainly want to play on stadium court," Fish said. "But they've got to put someone out on the grandstand, and who's that going to be? Are you going to put Federer out there, or Djokovic, or Nadal, or Serena? I'm not going to go ahead of those guys as far as people coming to watch them play. You've got to go where you've got to go."

The tournament did indeed put Serena on the stadium for the night session, and she found herself in a struggle from the start.

The points were long, with Williams unable to overpower her opponent for a change. She matched a career high with 20 aces in the fourth round but had only four against Wozniacki and lost serve three times.

It was a momentous victory for the No. 4-seeded Wozniacki, whose top ranking last year drew criticism because she hasn't won a Grand Slam title.

"If people talk about me or not, I mean, to be honest, as long as I win, I'm happy," she said.

She had lost her previous three meetings against Williams.

"Serena has won so many Grand Slams and so many tournaments, something that I would love to achieve one day," Wozniacki said. "So to beat someone like her that I know that never gives up is definitely something that means a lot to me."

Williams, seeded 10th, was playing in her first tournament since January after being sidelined by a left ankle injury. She hasn't won a title since August.

There's still one Williams in the tournament: Venus plays No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Orthomol Audio for Use As A Complementary Treatment method in ...

Posted on March 26, 2012, 4:58 am, by admin, under Uncategorized.

Very few among us realize that our hearing is constantly working: even while we sleep we can nevertheless perceive sounds ? it is a physical system that is constantly on the go!

A person?s ear is split into three components: the external ear, that we see and name our ?ears? ? this comprises cartilage and also skin; the middle ear that is responsible for balance and transferring ?noises? to the inner ear by vibrating the smallest bones in our bodies ? the hammer, anvil and stirrup bones ? and then the inner ear where noises are perceived and delivered to the brain for processing. Hearing is important for communicating with the outside world as well as for basic living.

Internal ear illnesses include unexpected hearing loss and tinnitus, which is a permanent ringing in the ears. Whilst abrupt hearing loss might affect one ear, tinnitus is often encountered in both ears. Although both these problems can be due to illnesses or ailments, they can both be also brought on by stress.

Orthomol Audio is a nutritional food supplement for special medical purposes. It?s been formulated to help preserve healthy hearing and it is especially created to help those people who are suffering from sudden hearing loss or ringing in the ears. It uses micronutrients such as anti-oxidants, essential amino acids, efa?s and minerals.

Orthomol Audio can also help support the ears? vascular function, metabolism of energy and promote antioxidant protection.

Orthomol Audio is simple to use ? the box (which is a month?s supply) contains sachets and capsules. You simply dissolve the contents of 1 sachet into water or juice and take it with or after a snack, along with the capsules.

If you are suffering with hearing difficulties, it is a good idea to seek medical advice from the medical doctor. He might prescribe certain drug treatments which you should take in order to treat the illness.

Orthomol Audio isn?t designed as a substitute for medicine ? it?s a complementary treatment method which will not obstruct the way your prescription medication performs and will promote optimum audio health and fitness.

Trayvon Martin hoodie and Skittles rallies spread across nation

From Atlanta to Seattle, rallies were held this weekend calling for justice in the Trayvon Martin case. More Trayvon Martin rallies are planned for today.

In Phoenix, Atlanta, Oklahoma City, Seattle, and Nashville, hundreds of people turned out for rallies and marches this weekend. Many were dressed in hoodies, the same garb worn by 17-year-old Trayvon Martin when he was shot by a Florida neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman on Feb. 26.

More rallies, prayer vigils, and hoodie protests are planned this week.

About 500 people turned out for a rally and march Sunday afternoon in downtown Phoenix to honor the? unarmed black Florida teenager that police say was fatally shot by the neighborhood-watch volunteer.

"This is not about Black or White or red, green or yellow. This is about a young man on his way back to meet with his family. ... That young man paid a dear price with his life," the Rev. Oscar Tillman told the crowd, according to The Arizona Republic.

In Birmingham, Alabama, more than 400 people attended a ceremony held in a downtown park Sunday night for Trayvon Martin. They gathered at a statue of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Mayor William Bell was among those attending the vigil in Birmingham. He says justice hasn't been done in the case.

A similar vigil was held at the civil rights memorial in Montgomery, Ala., where many demonstrators wore hoodies and carried iced teas. That's what authorities say Martin was doing when he was fatally wounded while visiting family in Sanford, Fla.

In Oklahoma City, dozens of Oklahomans wearing hooded sweatshirts and holding bags of Skittles joined a chorus of protests against the killing of an unarmed black teenager in Florida.

Demonstrators held signs, chanted slogans like, "No justice, no peace" and called for action Sunday in the death of Trayvon Martin.

Police say Sanford, Fla., neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot the 17-year-old Feb. 26 as he was returning from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles and some tea.

Officers say Zimmerman told them he shot the teen in self-defense and no arrests have been made. Federal investigators are trying to determine if Zimmerman shot Trayvon because he was black.

Protest organizer Ashley McMillan says she has a son who is biracial and can't imagine him being killed because he is black.

Ciara Torres-Spelliscy: Could Connecticut Be the First to Get Serious About Shareholders Rights Post-Citizens United?

Connecticut may be the mouse that startles the lion. Connecticut is a small state, but it has a strong record of leadership in addressing the trouble posed by money in politics. Now Connecticut may be the first state to take shareholder protections seriously post-Citizens United.

After a governor went to jail for corruption charges for accepting gifts from state contractors, Connecticut decided to regain its good name by getting serious about campaign finance reform. The Legislature pushed the reset button by adopting a ground breaking public financing system as well as pay to play restrictions on state contractors in 2005.

Also in 2010, it adopted beefed up disclosure requirements, which require political ads to show the top five donors. This small change brings more transparency to the Connecticut elections than exists almost anywhere else in the nation, including federal elections, which are still hopelessly dark.

Now in 2012, Connecticut could break ground again by requiring shareholder approval of corporate political spending. A bill pending in the Legislature would adopt this change. As I testified this morning, such a new Connecticut law would follow a best practice that has existed for a dozen years in the U.K. under the Companies Act that requires a shareholder vote to approve future political spend by U.K. companies.

Citizens United v. FEC (the 2010 Supreme Court decision) allowed corporate political spending in all of the states and federal elections. Connecticut was one of a score of states that had banned corporate money from their elections. Citizens United stripped Connecticut of its ability to protect its elections from this type of spending.

But Connecticut can still take steps to protect shareholders in companies that are now free to spend in Connecticut's elections by requiring a vote by shareholders before money is spent in an election. Here, Connecticut is building on the work of its sister states Iowa, Missouri and Louisiana, which each require board approval before corporations can spend it their elections, as well as Maryland, which mandates disclosure of political spending directly to shareholders.

Connecticut is in a federal circuit that is open to strong money in politics laws. For example, the Second Circuit recently upheld New York City's ban on corporate political contributions and the City's robust pay to play laws. In his concurrence upholding New York City's laws, Second Circuit Judge Calabresi had these choice words referencing the Bible, about the trouble with money in politics in America today:

The wider the economic disparities in a democratic society, the more difficult it becomes to convey, with financial donations, the intensity of one's political beliefs. People who care a little will, if they are rich, still give a lot. People who care a lot must, if they are poor, give only a little. Jesus's comment about the rich donors and the poor widow says it all. Today, the amount of an individual's campaign contribution reflects the strength of that individual's preferences far less than it does the size of his wallet.

Given this and other recent opinions, the Second Circuit would likely defer to Connecticut's legislative judgment.

And even Citizens United itself spoke approvingly of shareholders holding corporations accountable for their political spending. As Justice Kennedy wrote, "With the advent of the Internet, prompt disclosure of expenditures can provide shareholders and citizens with the information needed to hold corporations and elected officials accountable for their positions... Shareholders can determine whether their corporation's political speech advances the corporation's interest in making profits."

Connecticut has a clear path forward with the blessing of the Supreme Court. They can adopt a requirement that shareholders get a say on politics. With any hope, Connecticut can be the mouse that roars, exhibiting national leadership in this post-Citizens United America.

(AP) ? Facing heightened pressure to revive his presidential bid, Rick Santorum was forced to explain another apparent misstep as he courted Louisiana voters Friday, the eve of a critical contest in a Republican nomination battle that increasingly favors Mitt Romney.

Santorum said he would support the eventual GOP nominee ? if it isn't him ? despite what he insists are similarities between front-runner Romney and President Barack Obama that make them indistinguishable on some issues. He caused an intraparty uproar earlier in the week after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency.

"I've said repeatedly and will continue to say, I'll vote for whoever the Republican nominee is and I will work for him," Santorum said as he walked back his original comments less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls were set to open. "Barack Obama is a disaster, but we can't have someone who agrees with him on some of the biggest issues of the day."

The situation underscored Santorum's challenges ahead of a Louisiana contest he's favored to win. Santorum has had success in the South, having won last week's contests in Alabama and Mississippi. Regardless of the outcome Saturday, however, Romney will have collected more delegates than his opponents combined as the race then turns to more favorable territory in the coming weeks.

Santorum's continued missteps are complicating a candidacy already struggling to overcome major financial and organizational deficiencies. Before losing this week's Illinois primary, Santorum hurt himself by declaring that neither the economy nor the nation's unemployment rate was his top concern.

"I think the biggest development of the last 24 hours was Sen. Santorum's remarkable mistake in suggesting that re-electing President Obama was acceptable under any circumstance," Republican contender Newt Gingrich told reporters in Port Fourchon, La. "I just want to make very clear that I could not disagree with him more strongly."

And as his GOP opponents fought amongst themselves, Romney went after Obama on the second anniversary of his landmark health-care law, previewing a key argument in a potential general election matchup.

Standing in front of signs that read, "Repeal & Replace ObamaCare," as he campaigned in Louisiana, Romney called Obama's signature health care law an "an unfolding disaster for the American economy, a budget-busting entitlement and a dramatic new federal intrusion into our lives."

In attacking the law days before Supreme Court arguments over its constitutionality, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination also confronted an issue that has plagued him throughout the GOP primary process. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney signed a health care law that required everyone in the state to carry health insurance or pay a penalty. It's a state version of the national mandate that is the centerpiece of Obama's overhaul ? an idea that conservatives oppose as an example of government overreach.

Romney's steadfast support for the mandate at the state level has fueled continued conservative skepticism about his candidacy. And his attack on Obama's overhaul caught the attention of White House spokesman Jay Carney, who said Friday that the president would "not shy away from the opportunity to debate" the bill, particularly given Romney's background.

"That debate will be engaged in the fall if the Republican nominee feels so strongly about it," Carney said, referring to Romney as "one of the architects of this health care reform." ''As many have noted in both parties, the individual mandate provision of the president's Affordable Care Act bears striking similarities to the individual mandate that was put in place in Massachusetts."

Meanwhile, Obama catapulted the death in Florida of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, already the focus of major national attention, into the presidential campaign.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said.

Santorum was critical of local prosecutors, who declined to arrest the shooter, George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watchman who claimed self-defense and invoked Florida's' "Stand Your Ground" law. The law gives people wide latitude to use deadly force instead of retreating during a fight and explains why Zimmerman has not been arrested.

The failure to prosecute is a "chilling example of the horrible decisions made by people in this process," Santorum said. "Stand your ground is not doing what this man did."

Gingrich also criticized the shooter, whom he described as "a guy who'd found a hobby that's very dangerous."

Romney, like Obama, called the incident "a tragedy," and called for "a thorough investigation that reassures the public that justice is carried out with impartiality and integrity."

While attention to Martin's death overshadowed presidential politics at times Friday, Santorum tried to keep the pressure on Romney ahead of the Louisiana contest. Santorum argued that he is the only Republican candidate who can offer voters a stark contrast with Obama.

After testing his marksmanship with a .45 caliber semiautomatic Colt pistol, he told reporters: "If you don't have a choice, then a lot of voters are going to vote for what they have. That's why we have to have a choice."

Romney heads into Louisiana with a commanding delegate lead in the race to 1,144, the number needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

Romney has earned 563 delegates so far, compared to 263 for Santorum, 135 for Gingrich and 50 for Ron Paul, according to an Associated Press tally.

Louisiana offers a total of 46 delegates, but only 20 will be up for grabs in Saturday's primary. An additional 23 will be selected at the party's state convention in June and three others go to the state's Republican National Committee members.

And while Santorum tried to recover from one misstep, a supporter in the audience added an off-message wrinkle. As he fired the pistol, a woman in the crowd shouted: "Pretend it's Obama."

Santorum was wearing protective ear muffs. He said later that he didn't hear the remark but denounced it as "absurd."

The Secret Service, which provides security for Santorum, was trying to identify the woman.

Illinois features high-profile congressional races

CHICAGO (AP) ? Illinois Republicans emerged Wednesday from a combative primary in which a freshman congressman ousted a 20-year veteran and pledged to aggressively defend the party's recent gains, despite a new congressional map that whittles the state into districts favoring Democrats.

While GOP leaders expressed confidence they could hold onto most of the seats they won in 2010 during a tea party-backed surge, Democrats eyed Illinois as a prime opportunity to inch closer to control of the U.S. House.

"Illinois is going to be absolutely pivotal to what happens in November," said New York Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Longtime U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo was the biggest-name casualty of Tuesday's primary races, but his seat is almost certain to stay in Republican hands because no Democrat has declared a run in the north-central Illinois district.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a former Air Force pilot who received an endorsement from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, defeated Manzullo in a nasty incumbent vs. incumbent battle.

The most high-profile fall races solidified during the primary include matchups between tea party firebrand U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh and Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth, longtime GOP U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert and former one-term U.S. Rep. Bill Foster and the contest for the state's only open congressional seat.

Israel calls the election between Walsh, who has been in the national spotlight for criticizing President Barack Obama, and former U.S. Veteran Affairs Assistant Secretary Duckworth "one of the most glaring contrasts" among U.S. House races.

Duckworth, who easily defeated a former Illinois deputy treasurer, Raja Krishnamoorthi Tuesday, received early endorsements from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Obama adviser David Axelrod. She has painted Walsh as extreme and out-of-touch with the Democratic-friendly territory in Chicago's northwest suburbs. Walsh won a surprisingly close contest over three-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean in 2010, when four other newcomer Republicans won congressional seats.

But Walsh, who chose to run in the heavily Democratic district to avoid a primary run against another incumbent, said Duckworth is already a Washington insider and thinks voters in the northwest Chicago suburban district will resent it. He has challenged Duckworth to monthly debates until November.

"I am extreme and these are extreme times," Walsh said. "The Democrats are out of touch."

Democrats say that another congressional race, forming in far flung suburbs southwest of Chicago, is another shot at a pickup. Biggert, who first took office in 1999, has to run in expanded territory that's more Democratic-friendly in the contest against Foster, a scientist.

But Republicans believe that they can defend the other seats and are banking on an anti-incumbency mood.

"We are not sitting back and saying, 'Well this might be difficult,'" said Mike Shields, political director for the National Republican Congressional Committee. "We feel very confident."

He said that even with the map, there was only one Republican incumbent vs. incumbent race and that Democrats lost the longest-serving Democrat in the state's congressional delegation. U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello abruptly announced his retirement in October, leaving the state's only open seat.

Republicans are convinced the area has been culturally conservative and is trending Republican.

Jason Plummer, a lumber company executive, and Brad Harriman, a Democratic former regional education administrator are the general election rivals in what observers expect to be a pricey race.

Only two men ? both Democrats ? have represented the 12th Congressional District since World War II. The district runs from St. Louis' Illinois suburbs to the state's southernmost tip.

Plummer and Harriman are courting votes in a district encompassing a large swath of a chronically economically stressed territory. And Harriman, even weeks before winning the Democratic primary, has hounded Plummer about the lumberman's failure to make his tax returns public.

Plummer's has said he's not going to campaign on Harriman's schedule.

Other closely-watched races in Illinois include the contest between tea party U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling and former health care executive Cheri Bustos, who had an endorsement from Durbin, and freshman Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Dold and Democrat Brad Schneider, a businessman who received establishment Democrat backing.

More Democratic territory has been added to Dold's suburban Chicago district. He won Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk's old seat in 2010.

"The voters are looking for someone to work in a bipartisan fashion," he said.

Hillsborough County Real Estate! | Tampa Home Inspection News

Hillsborough County Real EstateNow, while the winter is still around, is the best time for homeowners to get a jump start on planning and prepping for their spring and summer home and garden projects; so when the weather really does warm up, it takes little effort to get the projects underway.

In addition to fine-tuning home improvement and gardening plans, it is also a good idea to make certain the required tools are in tip-top shape, so the projects are not delayed.

Here are some ways to prepare for the spring and summer seasons with just a few simple steps:

* Plans - Sketch out those garden plans, and pick the plants that can be purchased or grown from seed. Plans don?t need to be drawn to scale, but they?ll provide great background information for a shopping list. Research how early seedlings should be started, so they?ll be ready for transplant when the time arrives.

Also create plans for any home projects that need to be accomplished. The depth of those plans depends on how complicated the project is. Make certain all permits are in order, if required by the community; and if a contractor is needed, a formal agreement and timeline is in place prior to work commencing.

* Lawn tools ? Check pruning shears for sharp blades ? and either sharpen or replace them if they don?t easily cut through a small stem of plant material. Also, review lawn mower blades. Check the oil, gasoline and starters on all gardening machinery to ensure they?ll run correctly when needed.

* House tools ? A review of all home tools helps to determine if any new purchases ? or replacements are needed. This is the perfect time to head to the store and purchase missing tools, add new blades to saws or replenish the sandpaper stash ? eliminating wasted time running back and forth to the store.

* Hand tools ? A little care can go a long way in keeping your hands and feet ? the most valuable tools found in every household ? in good shape after the long, dry winter months. These tools are vital to accomplishing everything on those garden and home project lists, and they are often forgotten. O?Keeffe?s Working Hands and O?Keeffe?s for Healthy Feet are both guaranteed to effectively relieve dry, cracked skin in even the most extreme cases. And just a little bit of the highly concentrated, hypoallergenic and odorless creams is needed. Start every project off with healthy hands, and keep them that way throughout the entire season of projects. It?s the best cream for dry hands ? especially after the long and dry winter months.

* Materials ? As the project season gets closer, start purchasing the materials needed ahead of time. This helps to spread the cost out, and can give an idea of how much time and effort the project will take to be completed. Get started now in matching colors, finding the perfect accessories and even price-comparing between different suppliers to help save money.

For homeowners who haven?t experienced the warm-weather-project itch quite yet, it?s still a good idea to start thinking about those items on to-do lists to help with being prepared and ready to go when the season arrives. It doesn?t take a lot of energy to have a successful spring and summer project season. Don?t forget O?Keeffe?s Working Hands and O?Keeffe?s for Healthy Feet to keep hands and feet in healthy shape to tackle any job.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels ignited a new front Friday outside the capital, Damascus, in the first significant fighting there since regime forces swept over the suburbs weeks ago. The clashes highlight the shifting nature of Syria's conflict, with rebels lying in wait to rise up when the regime turns its guns elsewhere.

The return of violence to the Damascus suburbs raises questions about how long troops can control areas before they re-erupt. Though government forces have shown they can crushed armed fighters, the regime has appeared unable to conduct major offensives in more than one place at once.

That points to the likelihood that a conflict that is now a year old and is estimated to have killed more than 8,000 could grind on as it slides closer to a civil war.

Diplomatic efforts have so far brought no result, but U.N. envoy Kofi Annan told the Security Council in a briefing Friday that he was determined to continue his mission and would return to Damascus. Talks last week between Annan and Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus saw no progress in attempts to cobble together peace talks between the two sides.

After the confidential briefing via videolink, Annan told reporters in Geneva that he urged the council "to speak with one voice as we try to resolve the crisis in Syria." Russia and China have blocked council action against Assad's regime.

"The first objective is for all of us to end the violence and human rights abuses and the killings and get unimpeded access for humanitarian access to the needy, and of course the all-important issue of political process that will lead to a democratic Syria," Annan said.

Both Assad and much of the opposition spurned Annan's appeal for talks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow and Beijing were pressing Assad to cooperate and that other countries should do the same with the opposition, which he accused of stonewalling the U.N. mission. "Other Security Council members also need to do their part of the work and urge the opposition not to provoke the exacerbation of tensions," he said.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said in a letter sent to the U.N. Security Council on Friday that Damascus will continue its crackdown. But the ministry also said it will cooperate with Kofi Annan, the envoy charged with trying to help end the violence in Syria.

As the battles continue on the ground, the country's diplomatic isolation has grown. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain announced they will close their embassies in Syria, months after they withdrew their ambassadors from Damascus, the state-run Saudi Press Agency said. Turkey urged its citizens in Syria to return home Friday, saying some consular services will be halted in Damascus next week.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said his country is considering creating a buffer zone inside Syria to help protect people fleeing.

In a further attempt to cut off Assad's regime, Washington told the Iraqi government that Iran may be ferrying weapons to its ally Syria with cargo flights over Iraq. The U.S. asked Baghdad to take steps to cut off its airspace to any such flights.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Iranian arms exports are banned by a U.N. Security Council resolution, adding, "Any arms sent to the Syrian regime at this time would obviously be used in the brutal repression that the regime is exacting on its own people."

In recent weeks, Syrian forces have waged a series of heavy offensives against the main strongholds of the opposition ? Homs in central Syria, Idlib in the north and Daraa in the south. In the assaults, the regime has seemed to depend on select units and has relied heavily on the minority Alawite sect, to which Assad and the ruling elite belong. That may be out of worries over signs that some Sunni army conscripts have refused to fire on civilians. Sunnis are the majority in the country of 22 million and make up the backbone of the opposition.

In early February, Assad's troops launched a major military campaign to bring the Damascus suburbs fully under government control. But they soon turned their attention to driving rebels out of other flashpoints, including the Baba Amr district of Homs and Idlib in the north.

On Friday, activists reported that the Damascus suburbs ignited again.

Armed rebels clashed with government troops for hours from Thursday night into Friday in Tal, on the northern outskirts of the capital, as well as two other suburbs, Dumair and Qatana, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Syria-based activist Mustafa Osso said there were casualties. Syria restricts independent media coverage, making it difficult to confirm events on the ground and death tolls.

"Every time the regime controls a specific area we witness clashes in new regions," Osso said. "It seems that this is the strategy of the Free Syrian Army."

Similar clashes erupted in the eastern oil-rich province of Deir el-Zour, bordering Iraq, according to the Observatory and another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees. Troops also clashed with gunmen in two villages in the northern region of Jabal al-Zawiya, the state news agency SANA said.

The Free Syrian Army is a loosely organized umbrella group of army defectors and opposition supporters who have taken up weapons. The regime says it is fighting foreign terrorists and armed gangs, denying there is a popular will behind the revolt. But Assad's opponents say they have been forced to carry weapons because the government used tanks, snipers and machine guns to crush peaceful protests.

The LCC said 40 people were killed in violence across the country Friday, including six in the suburbs of Damascus, eight in Homs and seven in Daraa. The numbers could not be immediately confirmed with other activist groups.

Troops also clashed with army defectors in the northern Idlib province Friday, activists said. The fighting erupted in the town of Maaret al-Noman between government troops and army defectors. The Observatory said three soldiers died.

Tens of thousands of people held protests against the regime in many Syrian towns and cities after weekly Muslim prayers, in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, to the central regions of Hama and Homs, and the southern province of Daraa.

Security forces opened fire on several demonstrations, killing at least one person, the Observatory and LCC reported. An amateur video posted online showed hundreds of people marching in the northern city of Raqqa shortly before they came under fire. Demonstrators carried away at least two wounded people. The video could not be independently verified.

Regime forces also shelled the rebel-held central town of Rastan, north of Homs, killing at least two people, the Observatory and LCC reported.
