Facebook Revamps Preferred Marketing Developer Program To Make It Easier To Find ?Real? Social Media Experts

attachment-2Facebook doesn't want your company to get burned by shady "social media gurus", so today it expanded its Preferred Developer Consultant program into the new Preferred Marketing Developer program which offers certifications for high quality developers of apps and Page management, ads, and Insights tools and services. In March we got the scoop that Facebook planned to overhaul the PDC program, and today it finally executed by combining it with the Marketing API program and admitting?141 more companies to bring the total approved developer count to 232. It also launched a new directory and lookup tool to let clients search for consultants by location, expertise, feature, business model, and whether they serve small, mid, or enterprise-sized customers. Making sure companies that spend marketing dollars on its platform have a positive experience is crucial to getting them to buy more ads, make Facebook the center of their online marketing strategy, and boost the social network's revenues.

Friendship: Are we becoming the land of disposable relationships ...

I?ve been pondering lately the wildly popular song: ??Now you?re just somebody that I used to know?? ?I know it is supposed to be about a brutal romantic breakup, but I feel there might be some deeper meaning here for all of us.

On a deeper level I believe this song captures how disconnected we sometimes feel from the many people we used to call friends.? And deeper than that, it may be about how many of us have lost our faith in the power of love and deep personal connections.

Most of us know from experience that having good friends adds greatly to our quality of life.? It can make our lives deeper and richer, and research now shows that our friends may be one of the most important factors in increasing our longevity. The same isn?t true for relatives.

A 10-year longevity study of those age 70 and older concluded that a network of good friends is more likely than close family relationships to increase longevity.

Combine this information with the results from a 2006 American survey which showed that in the U.S., our circle of close confidants has decreased dramatically in the past two decades.? In fact, the number of Americans who say they have no one with whom to discuss important life matters has more than doubled.

This study, published in the American Sociological Review, was the first national survey on this topic in 19 years. The same researchers found that the percentage of Americans who talk to only family members about important matters increased from 57% to 80% from 1985 to 2004.

So if strong, long-term friendships sustain us best in our elder years, where does that leave those of us who watch friendships slip away in midlife?? I have lost a few old friends to distance and time recently.? I?m not really certain how it happened.? First they stopped calling, then they forgot about my birthday, and now I wonder if the Christmas cards will end soon. ?It makes me sad to think my old friends have simply become ?somebody that I used to know.?

Thankfully I do continue to develop new friendships, mostly with my elders, although I notice a tendency among my middle aged friends to turn more readily to family, not friends, for their most meaningful connections.

Sometimes we all need a reminder of how essential our ?chosen family? or friendships are to our very existence. Too often it takes an illness or some other type of loss to make us realize the importance of old friends. ?Then we may spring into action, offering a hug or some other type of support and affection.

Why not take the time today to focus on your friends. ?Where would you be without them? Then offer up some heart-felt gratitude for the wonder of their unconditional love for you.

Has the outsourcing industry collectively conspired to strip its value ...

April 16th, 2012 by Harsimran Pal Singh Leave a reply ?

Robert Morgan, director at sourcing consultancy Burnt-Oak Partners says. It is ?too easy to blame the economic recession? for the current lull in outsourcing activity.

Read his full comment here: ?Outsourcing has become synonymous with cheap service rather than Business enablement via using third party assets and know-how. It is a huge subject and the below simplifies things possibly too much, but the points below will offer insight as to the root causes of a lack a deal activity.

Blame sits with three entities:

1-Clients who have handed outsourcing service responsibility to junior management and procurement departments who push for lower pricing, plug and play service agreements, short contracts and high overhead multi-sourcing. Management then fail to provide training and governance for the hapless Service Relationship Management (SRM) team;

2-Intermediaries who have prolonged procurement cycles to maximise revenues to the point where doing global deals takes 18 months, or fixating on multi-sourcing which again is to maximise earnings. They carry zero responsibility or skin in the game after completing the assignment. Measurement of success still lives in techno-babble and not business related measures. Resurgent procurement departments where external advice is shunned or un-budgeted for, merely add to the downgrading of workable contracts, insight, risk mitigation and supplier accountability.

3-Service providers whose executive is technically and not business orientated and who fail to understand how to raise outsourcing importance up to client executive level. Suppliers employ technologists to sell services to technologists, rather than business enablement via technology. The Executive command the headlong rush to automate and virtualize everything via cloud etc. This is in turn makes everything transportable ? real plug and play ? denying the value of relationship and loyalty. Salesmen are overpaid and totally self-centred around how to maximise the commission payable not the best client solution. These days outsource service providers do not want your staff or assets thereby defeating a large-part of the Business Case to externalize.

Add all these aspects together and we collectively have conspired to strip outsourcing of its value and pivotal importance as a strategic tool for the benefit of the business. Hence times are very quiet in outsourcing.

However before you lose all hope; Burnt Oak believes that new shared equity models with real mutual commitment to risk sharing, investment rules, and common directorships for client and supplier, etc offer a real opportunity to reinvent enablement of Business through outsourcing.?

Make More Money Online with a US IP Address | ajudaparamim.info

April 11th, 2012 by admin

Everyone likes money ? we won?t deny that. One of the great things about the internet is that anyone can make money. Review sites, product creation, advertising, web design, article writing ? there?s a million ways to make money online. Sometimes however, the Western World has the advantage because of the internet infrastructure and the freedom of access to more tools online. Many governments in The Middle East, Asia, and Africa censor parts of the internet.

A US IP address can open up entirely new tools for you to make money online. It can help you grow your business, increase your income, and make your online business easier to manage. Good news: You can change your IP address, no matter where you are in the world. One obvious example is the use of Facebook. Facebook is becoming a hugely important tool for online promotion ? both direct and indirect. While some marketers spend time creating Facebook Fan Pages, outsourcing ?likes?, and paying people to talk about their products on their Facebook account, the nature of the beast is that products and services that people ACTUALLY use, get talked about more, in more places, and in turn, get more sales.

If people aren?t talking about your product on Facebook, you?re not making money. Without people bookmarking your site, pasting your links on their wall, and liking your posts, you haven?t got a chance to enter highly competitive markets.A large issue with this is that Facebook is also blocked in many countries around the world. If you?ve got an IP address from places like China, Iran, Egypt, Vietnam, or numerous other countries, you simply can?t make use of Facebook for your business. If you had a US IP address however, you could. Changing your IP address online is possible ? there are a variety of tools to do this. Some are free, and other paid, and accessibility is going to depend on where you live, what operating system you?re running, and how much you can afford to spend.

Alicia Silverstone on Unusual Baby Feeding Video: No Regrets!

Alicia Silverstone wants you to know she has no regrets about the highly unusual (and surprisingly controversial) way she feeds her son. So chew on that, haters.

The star made headlines last month when she posted a video that showed Alicia chewing food for her baby and transferring it to his mouth directly from hers.

Now she's defending herself from critics poking fun or criticizing her for it, saying it has been an accepted practice for millennia and she's not about to stop.

"People have been feeding their kids that way for thousands of years," she said this past weekend at a sneak preview of her new film, Vamps.

"It's a weaning process. It's just a process that has been going on for thousands of years of humanity ... I didn't think I was inventing anything."

"I wasn't saying this was anything somebody should do," Silverstone explained. "I wasn't trying to be independent or cause such a ruckus."

"But I'm very glad that I did it."

Bear seems to love it, anyway. He "literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I'm eating," she wrote when posting the baby video.

Colony Collapse Disorder Linked To Pesticide, High-Fructose Corn Syrup

Yes, you can switch to organic food. Note, however, that these are neonicotinoids -- they act on insects in the same way as nicotine (which used to be widely used as an insecticide, and is still used by organic farmers), but are designed to lower acute toxicity in mammals. So, assuming you're a mammal, rather than a honeybee, you might actually be choosing the more dangerous option. (Of course, with any pesticide, the levels of application are kept such that the amount in the final product shouldn't be harmful to humans, so the risk to you eating the produce is vanishingly small either way -- nicotine toxicity is more an issue for the farm workers applying the concentrated product.)

The FDA and EPA do a reasonably good job of making sure pesticides for food crops are pretty safe for humans, both acutely and chronically, because that's what they do. They don't test everything so thoroughly for honeybees, which is why it was assumed that if levels were kept below acute toxicity levels, there'd be no problem. It doesn't follow that it's a problem for humans.

Somebody mod this AC up, hes 100% spot on. Who modded the parent up anyway, its a wikipedia link from someone with an obvious paranoid bias. I mean he thinks corn is pollinated by bees for God`s sake (its wind pollinated).

If these studies are confirmed (and there are various critiques rolling in, so we'll see) they will tell us that the amount of neonicotinoid present in the kernel, a number so small as to be considered zero for the sake of human consumption, is just enough to essentially get bees drunk i

Family struggles to find home for son with autism ? Health ...

HERMON, Maine ? Gary and Cindy Burke remember the moment last summer when they realized it no longer was safe to live with their son.

Casey Burke, diagnosed with autism as a young boy, had grown into a 200-pound man who increasingly erupted into violent outbursts. Last July, he returned to the Burkes? Hermon home from a day program, went out to the backyard and attacked his mother.

?I went out to try to intervene,? Gary said. ?He got very, very upset then, more so, and next thing I know he took off on the run. We were behind him as best we could, but he got into the garage and he put his hand and arm through the glass window.?

The family wound up in the emergency room ?with blood everywhere,? Gary remembers. Casey needed more than 20 stitches.

?We knew then that we were headed down a road we probably weren?t going to be able to handle,? Gary said.

More recently, Casey, 24, head-butted Cindy as she stood at the kitchen sink, nearly knocking her unconscious. He also broke a floor joist in the living room in a fit of frustration.

The Burkes thought moving Casey out of their home and into an assisted-living facility would be simple, practically if not emotionally. He was approved under MaineCare, the state?s version of the federal Medicaid program, for a broad mix of?support services, including assisted living.

The Bangor facility that the Burkes were eyeing had a bed ready for him and staff members who know sign language, a must for Casey, who?s nonverbal.

But when Gary and Cindy called the Department of Health and Human Services, the state agency that oversees MaineCare, they hit a brick wall.

?We started this process thinking it was going to be almost a no-brainer, and all of a sudden it?s become World War III,? Gary said.

Increasing pressures

DHHS told the Burkes that Casey first would have to move to a crisis facility, Gary said. They weren?t informed where the facility would be or how long their son would live there until permanent housing was available.

For Casey, who gets agitated during transitions, as he did in the bloody incident last July, multiple moves are a daunting prospect. Cindy and Gary make Casey?s bed just so and put his favorite movie on when he returns from his day program to lessen the chances of an outburst.

Autism, a spectrum of disorders, is marked by symptoms that include social and communication difficulties starting in early childhood as well as repetitive behaviors and unusual distress when routines are changed.

Gary, meanwhile, is burdened with a diagnosis of his own. He has Parkinson?s disease, a degenerative disorder of the nervous system that on bad days can leave him in bed for up to 14 hours. His father also suffered from the disease, so Gary has seen its debilitating effects firsthand.

?If there?s anything good about it, I?m still able to see and help [Casey] and advocate for him,? he said. ?With Parkinson?s, you don?t know what the next year brings. Right now, I can still take care of him, I can still help Cindy and advocate for him and get him where he needs to be. A year from now, I don?t know if I?ll be able to or not.?

The growing safety concerns aren?t the only factor putting pressure on Casey?s situation. A state advocate working to help the Burkes will be out of a job in July if a plan to restructure DHHS wins approval in the Legislature.

Gary and Cindy want to move Casey to The Getchell Agency in Bangor, which offers 24-7 residential support services for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Getchell has a reputation for providing the best care and Casey already has friends who live there.

While they agonized over the decision to move their son out of their home, they?re confident Getchell would give Casey the independence that he?s made clear he wants, the couple said.

Yearning for independence

Cindy, traces of scratch marks visible on her face, teared up as her husband described their ordeal. For reasons the Burkes don?t fully understand, Casey typically attacks his mother. If Gary intervenes, the situation only escalates. Casey clearly regrets lashing out at Cindy but knows no other way to express his frustration, his parents said.

Their son may have autism, but he?s still a 24-year-old man yearning for independence from his parents, the Burkes said.

?It?s harder to let go of a special-needs child than it is, I think, for a regular person,? Gary said. ?And when you let go, you have to have a feeling that you?re letting them go to a place where they?re going to take as good care of him as you did.?

Despite the Burkes? difficulties, Casey actually caught a break in the family?s dealings with DHHS. Nearly 640 people are on a waitlist for the broad services he has been approved for, including residential care; Casey was bumped to the top because of his problems with aggression.

Another 359 people with developmental challenges are on a waitlist for day program services (there?s an overlap of about 150 people who are on both lists). The waitlists have existed since 2008.

Those eligible for services include people with autism, intellectual disabilities, IQs of 70 or under and those who need help functioning in their daily lives. They are entitled to services as a result of a court order that came in the wake of a scandal and class-action lawsuit involving patients at the former Augusta Mental Health Institute.

With so many people in need of services, DHHS has to maximize each and every dollar, said Ricker Hamilton, acting director of the department?s Office of Adult Cognitive and Physical Disability Services.

Rules versus money

Moving Casey into Getchell would require rearranging existing residents, who live in mobile homes, to make room for him. The shuffle would leave one resident without a roommate, a pricey proposition that leaves the state paying just as much for one person as it would for two.

?We want to utilize the funds as best we can,? Hamilton said. ?Having a one-person development is extremely costly.?

None of the recent budget cuts at DHHS affected the waitlist services, Hamilton said. Avoiding one-person housing arrangements was a policy of the prior administration that has continued today, he said.

According to Charles Schaffer, the state advocate working with the Burkes, Casey?s situation would have been a nonissue two years ago.

?One of the requirements of the statute that protects the rights of citizens with intellectual disabilities is we have to look at what their needs are and where to best serve their needs,? he said. ?Right now, [for Casey] that is Getchell. The crunch is, there?s no money, so it?s a statutory battle versus a financial battle.?

The irony is that sending Casey to a crisis facility temporarily will cost more than placing him directly at the assisted-living facility, Schaffer said.

Schaffer works within DHHS? Office of Advocacy, an independent agency that?s up for elimination under a bill to restructure the department. The office?s work would be outsourced to a private agency, resulting in a loss of 2? of its seven positions.

?There?s a lot of people like the Burkes that I deal with that have always kept kids at home, provided the service, just being parents instead of putting them into the system early on,? Schaffer said. ?Then all of a sudden these guys are getting older, and they have medical [issues] and they can?t keep up with it. So we go for help and it?s like sorry, get in line.?

Broken windows and boarded doors

The window pane Casey broke last summer is now boarded over, along with every other window in the Burkes? garage. The front gate is padlocked to prevent him from running into the road.

In the backyard, an old John Deere tractor sits with the battery removed so Casey can tinker with the parts.

?He likes anything with a motor on it, like most boys,? Gary said.

Casey sat on the living room couch as his parents spoke, withdrawn under a John Deere baseball cap. Dark curtains blocked out the windows to limit upsetting stimulation from outside. Plywood covered the basement door and an opening to a loft on the second floor. Stairs are too dangerous for Casey, Gary said.

At times, Casey is outgoing and happy to spend time with friends, the Burkes said. He recently took up dancing, a new favorite hobby.

?Now that we have made the decision, I think each day is getting better and better and we?re excited for Casey to move out and go out on his own and learn and do different things,? Cindy said. ?But it took us a long time to even get to that point.?

By speaking out about Casey?s situation, the Burkes said they hope to help others with disabilities to get the services they deserve.

?We need to get the word out that people need help,? Gary said. ?Sometimes you just have to put the politics aside and think about the people.?

With Schaffer?s help, they still hope to place Casey at the Getchell Agency. Hamilton of DHHS said in cases such as Casey?s the department does its best to work with providers to overcome funding problems.

The Burkes plan to keep Casey at home until they find a placement where he?ll receive the best care.

?We?re not going to give up,? Gary said. ?If they think we?re going away, we?re not going away. We?ve brought him into this world and we?ve taken care of him for 24 years and we?re going to continue that fight. We have to. It?s our obligation as parents.?

First Step For Self-Improvement ? Know Yourself | Improve Yourself!

Print this entry

?That guy is a snob?. ?He is very shrewd?.

?X is stupid?. ?Y is cunning like a fox?.

These are some examples of the refrains we keep on speaking or hearing so frequently in our day-to-day lives. We are always observing and describing others. We are constantly perusing the traits, attributes and characters of each and every person we come across through out our lives. It is our wont to keep dissecting other persons? behaviours, mannerisms and attributes with the intention, most often, of finding their faults, loopholes and weaknesses, so that we can exploit or manoeuvre them for our own benefit.

Whenever we meet a new person, the first thought that comes to our mind is ? whether he/she is good or bad, likeable or not; whether we can benefit with his/her association or not; whether he/she can serve our worldly interests or not. That is to say, we have a reflexive attitude to assess a person?s worth based on his/her ability to serve our interests. Our minds seem to be programmed for observing people with a view to picking out their faults and shortcomings.

But, do we ever observe ourselves in the same manner ? to find out our faults, shortcomings and flaws in our own behaviour and character? We spend most of our lives in focussing our minds (Chitta) on observing, appraising and assessing others, but do we ever undertake the same exercise for ourselves once in a while? Probably not and very rarely, if at all.

This is the crux of all our problems, all pur unhappiness. All the mental and emotional turbulence, disharmony, anxiety and unhappiness we keep facing all through our lives is the?result of our journey outside ? towards others. Very rarely do we undertake a?journey inside ourselves ? to know the Atman (soul)?to understand our own psyche, to observe our own behaviour towards others. Hardly ever do we take up?the exercise of appraising and assessing ourselves. Unless we do this, there can be no hope of self-improvement.

Meditation is the only way to undertake this inward journey. When we meditate, we shut off our outer senses and our Chitta starts its journey inside ? in the realm of Atman. The Atman is the sole guiding light for our lives. Unless we awaken and empower it, no improvement in our lives is possible. Empowerment of the Atman can only be achieved through meditation. There is no other way.

Samarpan Meditation (SM), propounded by H.H. Shree Shivkrupanand Swami, with His International Ashram (abode) at Dandi in Gujarat, India, is a unique, simplest and most profound way of awakening and empowering the Atman.

Paris Review ? Dear Don Draper, Relax Already, Adam Wilson

Dear Don Draper,

I just got off the phone with my mother, and she?s a bit upset. This is not your fault, I know. Mothers! You never really had one, so let me explain. They?re a complicated bunch, prone to outbursts of emotion. Always clutching their chests like their hearts are exploding; always assuming any discoloration is cancer.

For example, your ex-wife, one of the worst mothers around. One minute she?s slinkily horny, and the next she?s screaming at Sally for no reason. One minute she?s stuffing her face with Bugles?they still have those by the way?and the next she?s convinced that she?s dying, ruining your fun by forcing you to face mortality. See what I mean? And Betty?s not even Jewish!

Speaking of Jewish: my mother. ?Daddy and I almost plotzed,? she tells me, ?when that Jewish father said that ridiculous prayer. I mean, they could have had a normal Jewish person. You know, someone who went to NYU or Parsons even. Not some schlub in a madras jacket.?

I know you don?t have a say in these things, casting and whatnot. You just show up for work each day, dapper and wonderfully stubbled. Casting is Matthew Weiner?s territory. As a Jew, himself,? he should know better. That Ginsberg kid felt like he was fresh from Yiddish theater, a lesser Fyvush Finkel, only ten years too young?the last of the Borscht Belt joke jockeys. They could at least have let his tie match his shirt! In a show known for the complexity of its characters, Ginsberg? was a parody, Don, an animated cartoon among flesh and blood humans.

I?m worried about Weiner, I?m not gonna lie. He?s feeling the pressure now, what with Game of Thrones horning in on the Sunday night audience, flashy with dragons and nipples and blood.

If you see Weiner, remind him that?s not his game. He?s better at subtlety, or at least he used to be. Now I?m not sure. Things have felt a little obvious so far this season. Take Betty, for example, and the way she?s ballooned. That fat suit looks absurd and everyone knows it. Or the possible cancer plotline, swept aside in a single episode arc, so easily resolved.

And what once felt like sly nods to the burgeoning counterculture now read as obvious winks. According to my mother, who was there at the time, that backstage Stones scene was anything but realistic. A blissed out teenybop calling Brian Jones a ?troubador?? C?mon! I know it?s only ?66, but this is the Stones we?re talking about! Where were the black turtlenecks and bad girls!

And don?t even get me started on that op-art display in Sterling?s office. Cooper?s Rothko was one thing, but this is simply too much.

Still, I?m glad you took my advice and checked out some more rock and roll, and I?m sorry you had such a bad time at the concert. It wasn?t fair that those girls thought you were old and toolish, or that even your wife Megan said, ?you?re so square you?ve got corners.? You?re cooler than all of them, Draper, don?t worry.

I know this is hard to believe, but one day all the hip bands will wear tailored suits and skinny ties like you do. It?s a retro thing, an homage. The cool kids these days don?t smoke pot. They smoke cigarettes and drink bourbon and try to grow stubble like yours.

Brooks Brothers even named a suit after you. I know that doesn?t sound hip, but trust me. Brooks is back, mostly thanks to a band called Vampire Weekend. You?d hate their music, but they?re marketing gold: rich, white Ivy Leaguers playing African music and singing about shopping. So the Stones didn?t want to do your Heinz commercial? Big deal. These bros would have jumped at the chance. All the new bands would have. Long story short, the music industry?s fucked now, and the only way for musicians to make money is to shill for the commercials.

As for Ginsberg, I?m happy you hired him. At the very least you can teach him business politesse and color coordination. The young man could use some guidance, Don, and you need a new protege now that Peggy?s all grown up. Maybe send a few of your surplus female admirers his way, too? Teach him the Draper magic and all will be forgiven. It would be a mitzvah!

About your black secretary, Dawn. She gives me hope, and not just for civil rights. Now there?s a smoothly handled new character, lacking in stereotypes, a bold addition to the office dynamic. Just don?t sleep with her, Don. Seriously.

Most of all, Draper, I think you need to relax. Wipe that scowl off and stop worrying so much. Have a drink for god?s sake. Have two! You?re only forty, dude. It?s not the end of the world.

With love from 2012,
Adam

Seven Tips For Finding the Best Travel Deals

Best travel deals tip 1: Follow travel services providers on social media sites. These days, nearly every airline, hotel, resort and cruise provider has a presence on sites such as Facebook and Twitter and is using them to exclusively offer some fantastic deals. You may need to act fast the moment a deal is announced, though, since they usually have a short buying window before the offer expires. But, of course, you should not neglect looking for deals from more traditional sources such as the home sites of the travel services providers. And don?t forget to sign up for e-mail alerts and newsletters as well that will notify you as soon as deals become available.

Best travel deals tip 2: Stay flexible. If you want to avail of travel deals, you will have to adjust to their availability rather than the other way around.

Be prepared to be flexible about your date and time of departure or your preferred vacation destination.

Best travel deals tip 3: Avoid booking your trip during the peak season. You?ve probably heard it before, but it bears repeating: prices are always higher during peak travel seasons. But these peak periods will vary depending on your desired destination, so you will have to do some research. For example, winter is the peak season for tropical destinations. Spring, on the other hand, is the peak season for popular Spring Break destinations such as Mexico, Florida and the Bahamas. You can also save money by flying on a weekday rather than a weekend.

Best travel deals tip 4: Compare offers to find the best one. While it is more convenient to book a package deal that will provide you with everything you need for one price, you may be able to save more money by booking the components of your vacation separately.

Price each of the components based on the best prices you can find and then compare the total with the price of a package.

Best travel deals tip 5: Look for extras. Even if you have to pay full price for a particular package, if it comes with extras, you may still be able to enjoy substantial savings. For example, if you book a certain number of nights at a hotel, they may be willing to throw in an extra night for free. Or you may be able to avail of extras such as free meals or entrance to in-house sports facilities or spas.

Best travel deals tip 6: Choose your vacation destination based on your travel availability. If you have to take your vacation at a certain date, you can save money by choosing an off-peak destination that offers lower rates. For example, if you can only leave in spring, consider going to Puerto Rico or the Bahamas which are more affordable during this season.

Best travel deals tip 7: Look for deals from mid-priced and upscale providers. Although they charge higher prices, they also have more room to cut prices compared with bargain travel providers. And you may be able to get better accommodations at cheaper rates.

Empathy doesn't extend across the political aisle

Empathy doesn't extend across the political aisle [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 2-Apr-2012

When we try to put ourselves in someone else's shoes, we usually go all the way, assuming that they feel the same way we do. But a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that we have limits: we don't extend this projection to people who have different political views, even under extreme circumstances.

The researchers chose to examine political differences because of the big divide perceived between people on opposing sides, as shown by earlier research. We can look beyond someone having a different gender or being from a different country, but if you're a Democrat and someone else is a Republican, that person seems extremely different. "Political values are emotionally charged. People get really fired up," says Ed O'Brien of the University of Michigan, who cowrote the study with Phoebe C. Ellsworth.

They were actually interested in the question of how we project visceral states. These are strong internal states that we want badly to change. For example, in one study, the researchers approached people who were waiting for a bus in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the winter. These people, it can be safely assumed, were cold.

Usually, visceral states are so overwhelming that people project them onto others: If I'm cold, you must be cold too. But the researchers set out to test just how far this effect extends.

Each person was given a short story to read. The story was about a person who was either a left-wing, pro-gay rights Democrat or a Republican proponent of traditional marriage, who goes hiking in winter but gets lost with no food, water, or extra clothes. After reading the story, they were asked whether the hunger, thirst, or cold was most unpleasant for the hiker and what the hiker most regretted not packing. They were also asked how hungry, thirsty, and cold the hiker felt, and what their own political views were. The researchers gave the same task to people who were warm and comfortable in the nearby library.

People who had the same politics as the fictional hiker judged the hiker to be cold like them, as previous research predicts. But if the hiker had different politics, subjects weren't affected by their strong feelings; cold outdoor participants didn't think the dissimilar hiker was any colder than did warm indoor participants. Another experiment found something similar when people were fed salty snacks in the lab; they read the same story and were less likely to think a hiker of the opposing party was thirsty like them.

This shows that the tendency to project your feelings onto others does not extend to people who are very different from you, even when the feelings otherwise overwhelm your judgments. This might reveal a surprising limit to our ability to empathize with people we differ from or disagree with. For example, other research has shown that people are less likely to endorse torture after they're given a brief burst of pain. But these results suggest that people might feel less opposed to torture if it's being used on people very different from themselves. Similarly, feeling hungry or cold might not be enough to make people appreciate the plight of the homeless, if they perceive the homeless as very different from themselves. "Even if you're feeling shared pain, you may not let that connection affect your opinions of people are very, very different from you," O'Brien says.
